Liam Neeson praises Meryl Streep’s Narnia casting

Liam Neeson has shared his reaction to Meryl Streep taking over the role of Aslan in the upcoming Narnia adaptation, expressing his approval of the actress stepping into one of the franchise’s most memorable characters. The actor, who previously voiced the legendary lion in three Narnia films, believes Streep is an excellent choice for the role.

Streep is set to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming fantasy film, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The project is based on the popular literary series by C.S. Lewis and is expected to bring a fresh interpretation of the magical world to audiences. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on February 12.

Neeson, who portrayed Aslan through his voice in Disney’s earlier adaptations, initially admitted that he was unaware of the casting announcement. During a recent interview, he was informed that Streep had been selected to take over the character he famously brought to life between 2005 and 2010.

After learning about the decision, the actor responded with humour and admiration. Referring to Aslan’s symbolic connection with Jesus Christ in the fictional story, Neeson joked about the decision to cast a woman in the role.

He said that if the character was going to be portrayed as a female figure, there could hardly be a better choice than Streep. His comments reflected his confidence in the actress’s extraordinary acting abilities and her suitability for such an important character.

Streep is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished performers, with a career spanning several decades. Her involvement has already attracted considerable attention, particularly because Aslan holds a central position in the Narnia universe.

Gerwig, who is both writing and directing the upcoming movie, previously explained why she wanted Streep for the character. According to the filmmaker, she was searching for an actor who could bring wisdom, emotional depth and authority to Aslan without making the character appear overly serious or intimidating.

Gerwig also wanted someone capable of expressing both sadness and happiness while maintaining a sense of wonder and innocence. She believed the character required a performer who could communicate powerful emotions while preserving the warmth and magical qualities associated with the lion.

Age was another important consideration during the casting process. Gerwig specifically wanted someone older than 70, believing that life experience would help bring a deeper understanding to the character. At the same time, she wanted the performer to maintain a childlike sense of curiosity and excitement.

The filmmaker described her search as relatively limited, suggesting that only a small number of actors could meet all the qualities she had in mind. Streep ultimately emerged as her preferred choice.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is based on the sixth published book in Lewis’s fantasy series, although its events take place before those of the other major stories. The narrative explores the creation of Narnia by Aslan and takes place approximately a thousand years before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Gerwig confirmed her plans to adapt Lewis’s beloved books in 2023. Since then, the project has generated interest among fantasy fans, particularly following the announcement of its major casting decisions.

Neeson previously voiced Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008) and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

With Streep now preparing to bring her own interpretation to the iconic lion, audiences are looking forward to seeing how the acclaimed actress approaches one of fantasy literature’s most beloved characters.
