Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has called for presidential elections by July 2027, saying there is sufficient time to prepare for a vote, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
In an interview with the newspaper, Machado also called for greater transparency in the management of proceeds from Venezuela’s oil sales, which are currently overseen by the United States.
“The US government and the Venezuelan people all agree that the only way to make this sustainable and a real victory is to turn Venezuela into a stable democracy,” Machado said.
Machado has stressed the need for a democratic transition, while differences remain over the pace and timing of the process. Her call for elections by July 2027 comes as questions continue over Venezuela’s political future and the management of its oil revenues.
