Major power breakdown hits Dhabeji, 10 water pumps shut

A major power breakdown hit Dhabeji early Sunday after a cable fault in K-Electric’s system disrupted electricity supplies to several key pumping facilities.

According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) spokesperson, the power supply was interrupted around 6am across different phases of the Dhabeji pumping complex. K-Electric attributed the outage to a cable fault that affected the electricity network serving the area.

The breakdown brought operations to a halt at the Third Phase, Fourth Phase and K-III pump houses in Dhabeji, which play an important role in supplying water to Karachi.

The spokesperson said 10 of the 21 pumps at the Dhabeji pumping facility stopped operating following the power failure. The disruption has raised concerns about a possible partial reduction in water supplies to different parts of Karachi.

Water Corporation officials said they are in continuous contact with K-Electric management and have requested an early restoration of electricity to the affected facilities. Teams are also monitoring the situation to minimise the impact of the outage on the city’s water supply network.

The spokesperson said the affected pumps will resume operations as soon as K-Electric restores power to the pumping stations. Once electricity returns, the Water Corporation will immediately restart the 10 non-operational pumps and work to normalise water distribution in the affected areas.

Dhabeji is one of Karachi’s key water supply points, making uninterrupted electricity essential for the operation of its pumping infrastructure. Any prolonged power outage at the facility can affect the flow of water to various parts of the city.

Officials have assured residents that they are working to restore normal water supplies as quickly as possible once the power disruption is resolved.
