A married woman was shot dead at her father’s house in Wah Cantt on Friday in what police believe to be a case of honour killing. Investigators say the crime was allegedly planned by the victim’s husband and uncle, who were giving instructions from Qatar through phone and video calls.
The victim, Samira Aziz, had been living in Qatar with her husband. According to police and family statements, she was brought back to Pakistan about a week ago by two of her uncles. Her sister later told authorities that this visit was arranged under false pretences.
Police said that on the night of the incident, several relatives arrived at the family home in the Lalazar area of Wah Cantt. After a phone call from abroad, the house door was opened, and Samira was shot inside the home. She died on the spot.
The first information report states that the attackers were close relatives who acted on instructions given during a video call from Qatar. Samira’s sister, who witnessed the incident, told police that she was forced out of the room moments before the shooting took place.
According to investigators, the motive behind the killing was suspicion raised by Samira’s husband, who allegedly believed she had been speaking to another man while living in Qatar. Police have registered a case of murder, honour killing, and aiding the crime on behalf of the state.
Senior police officials have taken notice of the incident. While the husband and one uncle are still in Qatar, raids are underway to arrest other suspects involved. Authorities say arrests are expected soon.
The incident has once again highlighted the continued occurrence of honour-related crimes in the country, despite laws clearly outlawing such acts and prescribing strict punishment.
