Authorities have partially suspended mobile phone services in 24 districts of Punjab on Ashura as part of enhanced security arrangements for mourning processions and religious gatherings taking place across the province.

The temporary restrictions will remain in place until 10pm and apply only to selected sensitive areas identified by security agencies. Officials said the measure has been taken to ensure public safety and maintain law and order during one of the most significant religious events of the Islamic calendar.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the decision was made following a request from the Punjab Home Department after a review of the security situation and arrangements for Ashura processions and majalis.

Districts affected by the partial suspension include Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Gujrat, Narowal, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal and Rahim Yar Khan, along with several other districts across the province where large gatherings are expected.

Authorities clarified that mobile services have not been suspended across entire districts. The restrictions are limited to areas where major processions and religious congregations are being held and where security officials consider additional precautions necessary.

Meanwhile, mobile phone services in Lahore and the remaining districts of Punjab will continue to operate normally without interruption throughout the day.

Security has been tightened across Punjab for Ashura, with law enforcement agencies deploying additional personnel along procession routes and around sensitive locations. Surveillance measures and traffic management plans have also been put in place to facilitate mourners and ensure peaceful observance of the occasion.

Officials have urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and follow administrative guidelines during the processions and gatherings.
