Modi’s bid for 3rd term amidst job concerns and Hindu nationalism in Indian elections

The mammoth Indian election, marked by issues ranging from job security to Hindu nationalism, kicked off with a substantial voter turnout in its first phase.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, eyeing a historic third term, is campaigning on platforms of economic growth, social welfare, and Hindu nationalist sentiments. In this electoral showdown, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces off against a coalition of over two dozen opposition parties advocating for increased affirmative action and welfare measures while stressing the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions.

As polls closed, voter turnout ranged from 40% in Bihar to 68% in Tripura, showcasing the nation’s engagement in the electoral process. While some, like taxi driver S Rajagopal, praise Modi for fostering peace, others, like businessman V. Parasuraman, criticize the BJP’s performance in states like Tamil Nadu.
