Nepal flood death toll rises to 1,410

Nepali authorities have recovered 10 more bodies from flood-hit areas, pushing the death toll from last month’s devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border to 1,410.

Official figures released on Wednesday show that more than 5,650 people remain missing, including 848 foreign nationals.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said authorities have recovered 1,367 bodies from the affected districts, while 5,132 people, including 587 foreigners, are still unaccounted for.

In China’s southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, the death toll remains at 43. Officials said 519 people, including 261 foreigners, are still missing.

The disaster began on August 26 after a glacier on Nepal’s Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an altitude of around 5,200 metres. The collapse triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche that turned into a massive debris flow, sweeping through valleys near the border.

The floods and mudslides caused widespread destruction in Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts, as well as parts of the Kathmandu Valley.
