Islamabad – Despite being one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Pakistan has not included any major new climate-related project in the upcoming federal budget to address the growing environmental crisis.
According to budget documents, the federal government has allocated more than Rs. 2.78 billion for the development projects of the Climate Change Division in the next fiscal year.
However, the entire allocation will be spent on ongoing projects with no funding earmarked for any new climate change initiative.
The documents reveal that the total cost of the existing climate-related projects exceeds Rs. 123 billion but progress remains slow. By June 30, 2026, only about Rs. 35 billion is expected to have been spent on these projects.
Notably, Rs. 2.3 billion had also been allocated to the sector in the previous fiscal year indicating that there has been no significant increase in funding this time either.
Environmental experts have expressed serious concerns over the budget arguing that Pakistan faces devastating floods, intense heatwaves and other climate-related disasters almost every year. They said the slow implementation of early warning systems and monsoon preparedness plans reflects a lack of urgency in government priorities regarding climate resilience and disaster management.
