Veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ family announced his death on Wednesday, September 16, in a sombre statement.
Paying tribute to the late actor, his wife, actress Joke Silva, and their son described him as the “Lion of Lufodo.”
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” the family said.
Silva and her son continued: “Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Jacobs celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, 2026.
Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, the veteran actor built a career spanning several decades, appearing in international productions in the 1970s and 1980s before becoming one of the most recognisable figures in Nigerian cinema.
In addition to acting, Jacobs worked as a producer and stage director. He also co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, Joke Silva.
His film and television credits include Ashanti, The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, Pirates, Greatness, Smoke & Mirrors, The League of Gentlemen, Bent Arrows, Sacred Lies, Whitechapel, Adesuwa, Potomanto, The Antique, Bloody Ring, Oloibiri, Dry, One Fine Day and The Royal Hibiscus Hotel.

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has mourned the death of the veteran actor, describing him as “a true legend” who supported and encouraged young talent.
“A true legend, a kind and gracious man who was always willing to support, encourage and uplift young talents. Your remarkable legacy and contribution to our industry will never be forgotten,” she wrote on X.
Akindele also extended her condolences to Jacobs’ wife, the entire Jacobs family and the Nigerian film industry.
As of Wednesday, September 16, the family had not announced funeral arrangements.
