Omega Block traps Europe in deadly heatwave

Meteorologists warn that omega blocks are notorious for their persistence. Unlike passing summer highs, they can stall for days or weeks, prolonging extreme conditions.

The omega block weather pattern is driving Europe’s intense heatwave, with France alone reporting more than 40 deaths as temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius.

An omega block takes its name from the Greek letter Ω. It forms when a ridge of high pressure becomes wedged between two low pressure systems. The high pressure locks in hot, settled air, while the flanking lows bring cooler, wetter conditions. This setup is now baking France and Spain, while Britain sits on the boundary, experiencing scorching heat in the south and east and cooler, wetter weather in the north and west.

France has endured its hottest afternoons and nights since records began in 1947, with more than 50 departments placed under red alert.

Scientists remain divided on whether climate change is increasing the frequency of blocking events like omega blocks. However, there is consensus that global warming is intensifying heatwaves. Human activity has raised global temperatures by about 1.3 degrees Celsius since pre‑industrial times, creating a hotter baseline.

Clair Barnes, a research associate at Imperial College London, said Europe’s heatwaves are now 2 to 4 degrees hotter than they would have been without human‑caused warming. That means when an omega block occurs, the heat it traps is significantly more severe.

The combination of a stubborn atmospheric block and a warming climate has turned this summer into one of Europe’s most punishing in decades, with deadly consequences across the continent.
