OpenAI is no longer just a Samsung customer; it is becoming a co-developer of chips used in its own products. The company confirmed on Wednesday that it is strengthening its partnership with the South Korean giant across chip manufacturing, memory production and enterprise software deployment.
During a news conference in Seoul, Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, said the two companies have been making the most progress and attracting the most attention in their work with Samsung Electronics on manufacturing and researching future chips.
This future chip is expected to be an improvement upon Jalapeño, the inference processor that OpenAI created in collaboration with Broadcom and which was produced by TSMC earlier this year.
Moving from working with TSMC to Samsung would represent a significant shift in diversifying manufacturing away from Taiwan, as laboratories become more conscious of the risks of having their supply chains overly dependent on one region.
OpenAI is also relying on Samsung for the memory hardware its Stargate data centre project needs.

South Korea currently boasts the largest number of paying ChatGPT users outside the US, and adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise services in Korea is up around 28-fold in just one year, covering the country’s legal, finance, marketing and operations sectors.
Even Samsung is among them, allowing its Device eXperience department, responsible for designing phones, televisions and other appliances, to use ChatGPT, along with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude internally.
OpenAI claims that following the release of GPT-6 Astra on September 4, the number of users is expected to increase further.
