Pakistan has rejected India’s claims regarding Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming that unilateral actions cannot alter the disputed status of the territory.
Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said India’s unilateral measures do not change the internationally recognized nature of the Kashmir dispute. He stressed that Jammu and Kashmir remains one of the oldest unresolved issues on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.
According to the Foreign Office, United Nations resolutions provide a framework for determining the future of Jammu and Kashmir through a free and impartial plebiscite. Pakistan maintains that the people of Kashmir should have the opportunity to decide their political future according to their own wishes, with the process conducted under United Nations supervision.
The spokesperson also rejected what Pakistan described as India’s unilateral claims over the disputed territory. He said official United Nations maps continue to identify Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed region, while maps and claims issued by India cannot establish a new legal status for the territory on their own.
Pakistan also raised concerns over the human rights situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The Foreign Office called on India to immediately end alleged human rights violations and uphold the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Kashmiri people.
Sajjad Haider Khan urged the international community to take a more active role in addressing the Kashmir dispute. He called on global powers to press India to respect the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination and to fulfill commitments reflected in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Pakistan reiterated that a lasting solution to the Kashmir dispute requires the participation and consent of the Kashmiri people. It also called for international efforts aimed at ensuring that any settlement follows the principles and framework established by the United Nations.
