ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in information, broadcasting, media, culture and public relations, with a particular focus on promoting cultural exchanges and introducing Pakistani television dramas to Saudi audiences.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Rajeh Tami Albugamy on Tuesday.

Welcoming the Saudi envoy to Pakistan, Tarar congratulated him on his diplomatic assignment and expressed confidence that his tenure would further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The minister said Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations were entering a new phase, offering significant opportunities for cooperation in media, entertainment, music, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

He noted that the relationship between the two countries extended beyond diplomatic and political ties, reflecting shared history, religious connections and strong public bonds built over generations.

Referring to their strategic partnership, Tarar said the defence agreement between the two countries demonstrated the strength of their cooperation in the security sector.

He also praised Saudi Arabia’s economic and cultural transformation under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He cited the development of AlUla as a tourism destination and efforts to showcase the historical and cultural heritage of Diriyah as examples of the kingdom’s vision.

Highlighting the role of cultural diplomacy, the minister proposed joint initiatives to promote Pakistani entertainment and television productions in Saudi Arabia.

He said Pakistani dramas showcased family values, eastern traditions and Islamic culture, making them an effective platform for strengthening understanding and cultural connections between the two societies.

Tarar also suggested exchanging delegations of writers, poets, artists, musicians, journalists and digital content creators to develop professional and cultural links.

Discussing tourism opportunities, he invited Saudi media representatives, tourists and social media influencers to explore Pakistan’s diverse destinations, natural landscapes and historical sites.

The minister also recalled the sacrifice of Pakistani national Farman Ali Khan, who lost his life while rescuing people during the 2009 floods in Jeddah. He said his bravery symbolised the deep affection, solidarity and brotherhood shared by the people of both countries.

The discussions also covered cooperation against misinformation and negative propaganda. Tarar stressed the importance of strengthening fact-checking systems and producing content that highlighted the shared cultural and social values of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

To translate the proposals into practical initiatives, he suggested establishing a joint working group comprising designated representatives and technical teams from both countries.

The information minister also briefed the Saudi ambassador on Pakistan’s use of social media platforms and digital influencers to raise public awareness and promote government initiatives. He cited a social media post about the prime minister’s fuel relief scheme, which had attracted more than eight million views.

Ambassador Albugamy described Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations, founded on mutual trust, respect and political and military cooperation, as a source of pride.

He also emphasised the need to expand collaboration in cultural events, arts, literature and media, reaffirming the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries.
