Pakistan may soon see another increase in electricity prices as authorities have requested an additional charge of 82 paisas per unit for consumers across the country.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted the request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the fuel price adjustment mechanism for May. NEPRA has scheduled a hearing on the matter for June 30.
According to the CPPA, the average fuel cost of electricity generation reached Rs9.25 per unit in May, exceeding the estimated fuel cost of Rs8.43 per unit. The difference prompted the agency to seek an upward adjustment in power tariffs.
Officials estimate that if NEPRA approves the request, electricity consumers will collectively face an additional financial burden of around Rs12 billion. The proposed increase comes at a time when households and businesses are already struggling with high energy costs and inflationary pressures.
