Islamabad – Pakistan has taken a significant step toward local lithium battery production after a Pakistani company and a Chinese company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The initiative is expected to lay the foundation for a new industrial revolution in the country through domestic manufacturing of lithium batteries.
The agreement marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to develop a local battery manufacturing industry.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant, Haroon Akhtar said that local production of lithium-ion batteries would establish a new industrial sector in Pakistan. He added that the combination of Chinese technology and Pakistani expertise would open new avenues for industrial growth.
Pakistan’s first lithium battery plant
A major breakthrough has also been made in the local production of lithium batteries used in electric bikes, electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy systems. Pakistan’s first lithium battery manufacturing plant is expected to begin operations soon in Karachi.
The Pakistan Solar Association (PSA) has assured the Engineering Development Board (EDB) that work on the project is progressing.
According to a recent report by an English-language newspaper, EDB Chief Executive Hammad Mansoor informed a meeting that the new battery manufacturing policy has been submitted to the Ministry of Industries and Production. The government also plans to approach the National Tariff Board to reduce import taxes on lithium battery components. Once approved, the proposal will be included in the 2026–27 federal budget by the Ministry of Finance.
Hammad Mansoor said the policy aims to encourage domestic lithium battery manufacturing while reducing reliance on imported finished batteries. He emphasized that the future of energy depends on battery technology making local production essential for the country’s growing solar and electric vehicle sectors.
Production to begin within months
The project has been proposed by an engineering company called EV Technologies. The company’s CEO, Huma Khattak said that the manufacturing equipment has already been ordered and production is expected to begin within the next two to three months.
According to the report, the plant will be located in Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi. Initially, it will have a production capacity of 4 megawatts and will manufacture approximately 2,000 lithium batteries per month.
