Pakistani poet Umair Najmi has revealed that his poetry was formally used in the Bollywood film “Gustaakh Ishq” with proper permission, and he was also paid for its inclusion in the project.

In a recent appearance on a podcast, Umair Najmi participated as a guest and discussed various interesting topics related to poetry, literature, and his personal experiences in the creative industry. During the conversation, he shared detailed insights into how his work became part of an Indian film production.

He explained that the film’s director, Vibhu Puri, initially made contact with him in 2023 through one of his poet friends based in India. The director expressed a strong interest in incorporating Najmi’s poetry into the film and formally requested permission for its use.

According to Umair Najmi, he was sent the complete script of the film, along with specific sections where the filmmakers intended to include his poetry. He was also asked to review the material and provide his suggestions regarding the placement and usage of his verses within the narrative.

He further stated that at first, he was skeptical and thought the message might be some kind of scam or misunderstanding. However, when he received the full script and observed the seriousness and professionalism of the communication, he realized that the offer was genuine and part of an official creative collaboration.

Umair Najmi confirmed that he was duly compensated for the use of his poetry in the film. However, he also expressed that even if he had not been paid, it would still have been a matter of pride for him to see his name appear on screen alongside legendary Indian poet Gulzar.

He said that seeing his name credited under such a highly respected and iconic literary figure was an extremely honorable moment for him. According to him, being associated, even indirectly, with a personality like Gulzar represents a significant milestone in any poet’s career.

The poet emphasized that this experience was not only professionally rewarding but also emotionally fulfilling. It reflected the cross-border appreciation of literature and poetry, where creative work can transcend political and geographical boundaries and still be valued on artistic merit.

Umair Najmi’s revelation highlights the growing cultural exchange between artists from Pakistan and India, particularly in the fields of poetry, music, and cinema.
