South American side Paraguay has suffered a setback at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with midfielder Miguel Almirón suspended for one match.
According to international media reports, Almirón was shown a red card during Paraguay’s June 19 match against Türkiye. FIFA stated that he was suspended for violating Article 14.1(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The world football governing body added that the suspension will take effect in Paraguay’s next World Cup match and that the decision cannot be appealed.
Why was Almirón suspended?
Almirón received the punishment after covering his mouth with his hand during an altercation with Turkish player Mert Müldür.
The incident occurred during Paraguay’s 1-0 victory over Türkiye. In the closing moments of the first half, an argument broke out between Almirón and Müldür, during which Almirón covered his mouth while speaking.
Under FIFA’s newer regulations, players are not permitted to conceal their mouths during such exchanges as it may be interpreted as an attempt to hide what is being said.
As a result, Almirón was shown a red card and will now miss Paraguay’s next World Cup fixture.
