Phil Foden commits future to Manchester city with new four-year contract

Manchester City and England international Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract extension, reaffirming his long-term commitment to the Premier League champions and providing a significant boost to new head coach Enzo Maresca ahead of the upcoming season.

The new agreement secures Foden’s future at the Etihad Stadium after a difficult campaign marked by injuries and inconsistent performances. With his previous contract due to expire at the end of the upcoming season, speculation had grown over his long-term future. However, the latest deal, which also includes the option of an additional one-year extension, ensures that one of City’s most influential homegrown players remains at the club for years to come.

Expressing his delight after signing the extension, Foden described the decision as an emotional one, saying that representing Manchester City has always been his dream. Having progressed through the club’s youth academy, he said wearing the City shirt continues to be one of the greatest honours of his career.

The midfielder reflected on the club’s remarkable achievements during his time in the first team, acknowledging how fortunate he has been to contribute to one of the most successful eras in Manchester City’s history. At the same time, he stressed that both he and the club remain determined to continue competing for more domestic and international trophies in the coming seasons. Foden also thanked the club’s management, coaching staff, teammates, and supporters for their continued confidence in him, promising to repay their faith through his performances on the pitch.

At just 26 years of age, Foden has already built an extraordinary trophy collection. Since making his breakthrough from Manchester City’s academy, he has helped the club win six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, and five League Cups. His success has made him one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, alongside Bernardo Silva and John Stones, who both departed during the recent transfer window.

Despite his impressive achievements, the past season proved to be one of the most challenging of Foden’s career. Persistent injury problems disrupted his rhythm and affected his performances, while he also missed selection for England’s squad at the recent FIFA World Cup. Earlier, Foden had spoken openly about his struggles with mental health and the difficulties he experienced away from football, highlighting the personal challenges that accompanied his dip in form.

Throughout his Manchester City career, Foden has scored 110 goals in 369 appearances, underlining his importance to the club over several seasons. However, he started only seven of City’s final 26 matches before legendary manager Pep Guardiola stepped down at the end of the campaign. Guardiola’s departure marked the beginning of a new era, with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca appointed as his successor in June.

Foden expressed great enthusiasm about working under Maresca once again. The two previously worked together during Manchester City’s historic 2022–23 treble-winning season, when Maresca served as part of Guardiola’s coaching staff. Foden praised the Italian coach’s meticulous attention to detail, tactical knowledge, and ability to improve players through focused training sessions.

He added that Maresca’s football philosophy, built around playing out from the back, maintaining possession, and controlling matches through technical quality, perfectly complements his own style of play. Foden believes the new manager’s approach will allow him to perform at his best and contribute even more to Manchester City’s ambitions as the club begins another chapter in its pursuit of domestic and European success.
