KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) engineer was shot dead by an unidentified armed motorcyclist in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar area while two other people were injured in separate shooting incidents across the city police said on Sunday.
The fatal shooting occurred in Block 13 of Gulistan-e-Johar within the jurisdiction of Shahrah-e-Faisal Police Station. The victim was identified as 54-year-old Imtiaz Ahmed son of Shah Deen, who worked as an engineer at PIA and was the father of four children.
According to police Imtiaz had left his residence in Rimsha Avenue to buy bread when he was targeted. He sustained a gunshot wound near his ribs which proved fatal. Investigators said the victim’s mobile phone wallet and other belongings were still with him indicating that the incident was not apparently linked to a robbery.
Police obtained CCTV footage showing Imtiaz crossing the road before collapsing near a parked vehicle. A motorcyclist was subsequently seen leaving the area at speed. Investigators suspect the rider may have been responsible for the shooting.
Police said the attacker fired four to five shots. A nearby vehicle was also struck by three bullets. Four empty 9mm cartridges and CCTV recordings were collected from the scene as part of the investigation.
In a separate incident near Jumma Goth in Korangi Sector 51-B a man was seriously injured when suspected robbers opened fire while escaping after allegedly carrying out a robbery at an ice factory.
The injured man was identified as 35-year-old Ghulam Nabi who suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. He was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for treatment.
Another shooting occurred at a milk shop near Taqi Centre in North Nazimabad’s Block J leaving 25-year-old Atif son of Sabir seriously injured. Police said the incident was not related to robbery but reportedly stemmed from a family dispute.
According to the police station’s SHO the injured man told investigators that his family had an ongoing dispute in Punjab. He reportedly attempted to respond to the attackers using a security guard’s weapon but they managed to escape.
Police have launched investigations into all three incidents.
