Police obtain crypto trading records in Mir Raza Ali murder case

Police have obtained four years of cryptocurrency trading records belonging to 25-year-old businessman Mir Raza Ali, whose body was found with a gunshot wound in Gulistan-i-Jauhar in July.

According to a police official, the records were retrieved through the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and showed that Ali had been involved in cryptocurrency futures trading on Binance for around four years.

Ali’s friend Abdul Hasem had earlier told the judicial commission investigating the case that he and Ali used to trade cryptocurrency together. Hasem said he quit after suffering losses, while Ali continued trading and was doing comparatively well.

Police had approached the NCCIA last month to obtain Ali’s digital records and WhatsApp account details as part of efforts to determine whether anything suspicious was linked to his death.

Ali went missing on July 28 and his body was recovered the following day. The case has since remained controversial, with his family questioning the initial police handling and rejecting an early attempt to portray the death as suicide.

A second post-mortem later provided a significant development. The final medical report stated that Ali died from a firearm injury to the chest, with the bullet entering from his back and exiting through the front of his chest. The report concluded that the findings were inconsistent with suicide.

The Sindh government has formed a judicial commission, headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial, to examine the circumstances surrounding Ali’s death and determine whether the investigation was conducted impartially.

The investigation has also undergone several changes, including the reconstitution of the police team, transfer of the case to Zaman Town police station and addition of a murder charge to the FIR.
