Power Division clarifies, ‘no plans for fixed tax on solar energy’

The Power Division has refuted claims of the government planning to impose a fixed tax on solar power, clarifying that no such proposal has been submitted.

According to the division, the focus remains on promoting alternative energy through the Net Metering Policy of 2017, which has witnessed rapid solarization.

However, there are considerations for amendments aimed at alleviating the burden on low-income individuals.

Reports suggesting a reduction in buyback rates of net metering electricity were attributed to a misalignment with government plans, as affluent consumers opt for net metering.

This shift has raised concerns about the financial strain on less affluent consumers, leading to discussions on the practicality of current rates.

While the government aims to encourage solarization, there is a need for a feasible pricing structure to ensure sustainability.
