The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has served a show-cause notice to Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Iqbal Afridi over allegations of repeatedly violating party discipline and engaging in conduct deemed harmful to the party’s unity and reputation.
According to the notice, issued by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Afridi has been directed to submit a written explanation within seven days addressing several allegations raised against him. The party warned that failure to respond within the given timeframe could lead to disciplinary action, including the cancellation of his basic membership and expulsion from PTI.
The notice accuses Afridi of repeatedly displaying inappropriate behaviour toward fellow PTI lawmakers. It alleges that he has frequently misbehaved with party MNAs during parliamentary activities and that some of these incidents were recorded on camera and widely circulated through television broadcasts and social media platforms.
PTI also claimed that Afridi used offensive language and made disrespectful remarks against fellow members of the parliamentary party. According to the notice, such conduct has negatively affected the party’s internal environment and undermined efforts to maintain discipline among its elected representatives.
Another major allegation concerns Afridi’s conduct inside the National Assembly. The notice states that he repeatedly acted against decisions made by the PTI parliamentary party during parliamentary proceedings, suggesting that his actions contradicted agreed party policies and weakened collective decision-making.
In addition to his alleged behaviour toward lawmakers, the party accused Afridi of treating both junior and senior staff members of the National Assembly in an inappropriate and disrespectful manner. PTI argued that his overall conduct reflected poorly on the party and damaged its public image.
A significant part of the notice refers to an incident outside Adiala Jail on June 23. According to the party, Afridi was involved in planning an attack on fellow PTI lawmakers who had gathered outside the jail to express solidarity with party founder Imran Khan. The notice alleges that one of Afridi’s associates physically assaulted several party members and claims that Afridi himself was directly involved in the altercation.
The party stated that the gathering outside Adiala Jail was organised to support Imran Khan and that Afridi’s alleged actions disrupted the purpose of the event while creating unnecessary divisions within the party.
PTI described Afridi’s overall behaviour as serious misconduct that had brought disrepute to the party. The notice stated that his repeated actions amounted to indiscipline and conduct prejudicial to party unity, making disciplinary proceedings necessary under the party’s constitution.
The notice formally asked Afridi to explain why his membership should not be terminated and why he should not be expelled from the party. It further warned that if no satisfactory response is received within seven days, the party may proceed with further action without additional notice.
According to party sources, the decision to issue the show-cause notice was taken during a recent PTI parliamentary party meeting, where members discussed Afridi’s conduct and his recent confrontations with fellow lawmakers.
Afridi has recently been involved in several public disputes within the party, including an argument with PTI leader Junaid Akbar during a parliamentary session and another confrontation with MNA Sibghatullah outside Adiala Jail. These incidents reportedly contributed to the party leadership’s decision to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him.
