The ongoing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march is reportedly affecting routine government operations and decision-making in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with several official meetings postponed amid the absence of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
According to government sources a number of important matters and summaries are awaiting approval because the chief minister is away from the provincial capital while participating in the march.
Several meetings scheduled at the Chief Minister’s House have reportedly been postponed. A meeting of the Planning and Development Department could not take place due to the chief minister’s absence while a Provincial Working Party (PWP) meeting was also delayed amid uncertainty surrounding the ongoing political activity.
Officials said the chief minister’s scheduled meetings have been postponed while several policy decisions have also been held up. A number of summaries requiring approval have reportedly remained pending.
The absence of the chief minister and several provincial ministers has also affected the functioning of the provincial cabinet. A cabinet meeting could not be held despite the government’s stated schedule of holding the session every Friday under the chief minister’s chairmanship.
Government sources further said several important matters and proposals are currently pending before the provincial cabinet. Meetings of various ministerial committees have also reportedly been delayed because ministers, advisers and special assistants are not available.
The delays are beginning to affect decision-making on important administrative matters according to officials. They added that approval for several development projects has also not been obtained because of the absence of relevant cabinet members.
The situation comes as the PTI continues its long march through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has been participating in the political mobilisation and recently announced a change in the march’s route.
The reported disruption highlights the administrative challenges facing the provincial government while senior officials are engaged in the ongoing political activity.
Further delays in cabinet and departmental meetings could affect the processing of pending proposals and development-related decisions if the situation continues.
