Punjab braces for final monsoon spell

LAHORE: Punjab is expected to receive the ninth and final spell of the monsoon season from today, with rain likely to affect most parts of the province until September 17.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), several districts may experience intermittent showers during the spell. Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall could create temporary urban flooding in major cities, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad.

The weather system may also pose risks in hilly areas. The PDMA has cautioned about possible landslides in Murree, the Galiyat region and other mountainous areas, particularly during periods of intense rainfall. Residents and tourists in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.

Meanwhile, several districts of Sindh are also likely to receive rain from this evening. The forecast covers areas including Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Hyderabad and Khairpur, where rainfall is expected to continue until September 16.

Karachi may also experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms between September 14 and 16. The weather conditions could bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, although isolated heavy showers cannot be ruled out in some areas.

The latest monsoon spell comes as the country approaches the end of the seasonal rainfall period. Authorities have urged relevant departments to remain prepared for water accumulation, particularly in low-lying urban areas, while residents in landslide-prone regions should exercise caution during heavy rain.
