The Punjab government has changed the dates for Lahore’s Basant 2027 celebrations for the second time with the provincial cabinet approving March 12, 13 and 14 for the kite-flying festival.

The new schedule replaces the previously announced 10-day programme which was set to run from January 29 to February 7 with a break on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day.

According to sources, Lahore Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz submitted a proposal to the Punjab Home Department seeking a change in the festival dates. The department forwarded the summary to the provincial cabinet which approved the revised schedule.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had earlier announced the January dates as part of an extended celebration aimed at promoting Punjab’s cultural heritage and preserving Lahore’s traditional identity. She had also instructed relevant departments to prepare for the event and improve public safety and visitor facilities.

Under the latest decision Basant will now be celebrated over three days in March instead of the previously planned 10-day period.

Preparations for the festival are continuing under a regulatory framework governing kite flying kite manufacturing, sales and the use of kite strings. The Lahore district administration has clarified that kite flying will be allowed only on the officially designated festival dates.

Authorities have prohibited chemical-coated, metallic and sharp kite strings, commonly known as manjha. Only approved kite sizes and cotton string will be permitted under the restrictions intended to reduce the risk of accidents.

The registration process for kite manufacturers began on September 5. Applicants must fulfil legal requirements before receiving licences while assistant commissioners have been instructed to verify credentials and inspect manufacturing premises.

A dedicated registration portal has also been introduced for Basant 2027. Officials have warned that violations involving the production, transportation or use of prohibited kite strings could result in penalties.

The government has also been planning cultural activities and beautification initiatives across Lahore, including decorations along major roads, parks and green belts. The Walled City has been considered as a venue for events featuring traditional Basant colours local food stalls and live performances by musicians and artists.

Lahore revived the festival from February 6 to 8, 2026 after a prolonged ban under regulations designed to improve safety. Authorities are expected to strengthen these measures ahead of the 2027 celebrations.
