Qatar PM signals critical phase in Gaza ceasefire talks

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani highlighted the delicate nature of ongoing discussions regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

He emphasized efforts to address key challenges in the negotiations without divulging specific details.

The Qatari premier strongly condemned Israel’s policy of what he termed as “collective punishment” in its conflict with Hamas, the ruling Palestinian Islamist group in Gaza, as well as the recent escalations in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Mediated by Qatar and Egypt, the ceasefire talks persist amidst a dire humanitarian crisis gripping Gaza, marked by acute shortages of essential supplies such as food, medicine, and medical facilities.

The conflict erupted when Hamas launched attacks on southern Israel from Gaza on October 7, resulting in casualties and the capture of hostages. In response, Israel initiated an extensive air and ground offensive, leading to significant Palestinian casualties, as reported by Gaza health authorities.
