Ronaldo’s season finished ahead of Lionel Messi’s 2012 campaign, in which the Argentine scored a record 91 goals in a calendar year, while Ronaldo’s 2017 season with Real Madrid placed third.

During the 2007-08 season, Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions and helped Manchester United win both the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. He received his first Ballon d’Or in 2008.

Messi’s 2012 campaign was marked by his record-breaking goal tally for Barcelona and Argentina. His season ranked second in the poll, while Ronaldo’s 2017 campaign, during which he won the Ballon d’Or for a fifth time overall, finished third.

The poll, called the Ballon d’Or of All Time (BOAT), invited fans to choose among individual winning seasons by players who had won the award at least twice. It was a public vote rather than an official Ballon d’Or award, and no new physical trophy was presented.

Each vote cost one euro, and participants could vote multiple times. France Football reported that 5,009 people had voted more than once, meaning the final ranking reflected votes cast rather than the number of individual supporters who preferred each campaign.
