Saira Banu honours Dilip Kumar on fifth death anniversary

Five years have passed since the world lost one of Indian cinema’s greatest legends, and Saira Banu has marked the occasion with a tribute that speaks not of grief in its conventional sense, but of a love so complete it refuses to acknowledge absence.
On July 7, the fifth anniversary of Dilip Kumar’s passing, his widow took to social media to share a beautifully written reflection on memory, companionship and the enduring presence of a man she called Sahib. The tribute was not a lament. It was a quiet declaration that for Saira Banu, Dilip Kumar has never truly left.
She wrote that the most beautiful thing about life is that it never truly departs, lingering instead in memories that are faithful companions, returning unbidden in quiet moments and crowded ones alike, carrying with them every smile, every glance, every word, as though nothing has ever truly been lost.
She spoke of their life together with profound gratitude, describing it as not merely a life lived side by side but a life fulfilled. She wrote that as long as Sahib was by her side, she never found reason to concern herself with the burdens and trivialities of the worldly existence. His spirit, she said, was so generous, and his grace in shouldering responsibility so complete, that he allowed her the rare privilege simply to be his companion.
Her tribute extended beyond the personal, acknowledging the place Dilip Kumar holds in the wider cultural imagination. She noted that the world would remember him as one of cinema’s greatest legends, while those who were closest to him would always cherish his kindness, generosity and compassion.

Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7, 2021, at the age of 98 at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, following a prolonged illness. He had been battling advanced prostate cancer and subsequently suffered kidney failure. His death marked the end of an era in Indian cinema, but in the heart of the woman who loved him for over five decades, he has never gone anywhere at all.
