Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan has opened up about nepotism in the Indian film industry, acknowledging that her famous family background gave her several advantages while also arguing that the debate often overshadows her hard work and professional achievements.
In a recent interview, the 31-year-old actress, daughter of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, spoke candidly about the benefits of being born into a prominent film family and the criticism she has faced throughout her career.
Sara said she did not deny that her family background helped open doors for her in the film industry. It also gave her recognition and public attention even before she made her debut as an actress.
However, she expressed concern that nepotism had become a negative term and that discussions surrounding it often ignored the efforts she had made to establish herself as an actor.
Sara pointed out that she, Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Panday had not chosen the families into which they were born. She suggested that they should not be repeatedly criticised for their family backgrounds without consideration of their individual work and achievements.
The actress acknowledged that she had received opportunities that many aspiring performers could only hope for. However, she said that even after eight years in the industry, she continued to feel the need to defend her abilities and career decisions.
Sara also discussed her family circumstances, explaining that she lived with her mother and that her father had not personally approached film production houses, negotiated contracts or requested filmmakers to cast her in their projects.
She cited her experience with her debut film, Kedarnath, as an example of the challenges she had faced. Sara said she tried to handle the problems surrounding the film herself.
According to the actress, the absence of an influential mentor who could intervene on her behalf had sometimes made her journey more difficult. She believes it is important to recognise both the advantages and disadvantages associated with having connections in the film industry.
Sara comes from one of Bollywood’s well-known film families. Her father, Saif Ali Khan, and mother, Amrita Singh, are established actors. Her paternal grandmother, Sharmila Tagore, is a celebrated actress, while her paternal grandfather, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was a former captain of the Indian cricket team.
Her maternal grandmother, Rukhsana Sultana, was also known as a writer and politician.
Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh divorced in 2004, after which Sara was raised primarily by her mother.
Sara’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the ongoing debate over nepotism in Bollywood, particularly the challenges faced by star children in balancing the advantages of family connections with the expectations that they prove their own talent and merit.
