MULTAN: The Pakistan Saraiki Party (Taj Langah group) has expressed serious concern over the ongoing water crisis affecting South Punjab and parts of Balochistan, accusing authorities of diverting regional water resources to major urban centers while local communities face growing shortages.
Speaking at a party meeting in Bahauddin Zakariya, senior leaders said the continued transfer of water from the region to Lahore and other cities was depriving residents of their rightful share and worsening agricultural and economic challenges. They argued that South Punjab contributes significantly to the country’s economy but continues to face neglect in development and resource allocation.
Party representatives maintained that several districts in South Punjab lack adequate access to clean drinking water and irrigation supplies, despite being key agricultural areas. They called on the federal and provincial governments to address what they described as long-standing injustices toward the region and ensure a fair distribution of water resources.
The leaders also renewed their demand for the creation of a separate South Punjab province, saying administrative reforms are necessary to resolve governance issues and improve public services. They stressed that greater autonomy would help address local concerns more effectively and accelerate development in underserved areas.
In addition, the party urged authorities to allocate sufficient resources for Balochistan and complete pending infrastructure projects, including water supply schemes. According to the speakers, equitable treatment of all regions is essential for national unity and sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with a call for immediate action to resolve the water crisis, warning that continued neglect could deepen economic hardships and public dissatisfaction across South Punjab and neighboring areas.
