RIYADH: Saudi Arabia appears to be increasing its military preparations amid a renewed wave of attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, raising concerns that tensions between the two sides could escalate into a broader conflict.

The developments follow several weeks of attacks targeting Saudi-linked shipping and infrastructure in and around the Red Sea. The situation has increased pressure on Riyadh as it seeks to protect vital maritime and energy interests.

In the latest reported incident, the Houthis said they had attacked a vessel near Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu on August 24. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack during a televised statement.

Saudi shipping company Bahri later confirmed that one of its vessels, Amzan, had been involved in a maritime incident in the Red Sea. The company said all crew members were safe and that no injuries had been reported.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency also reported that a tanker had been struck by an unidentified projectile around 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu. It said all crew members were safe and there was no reported environmental impact.

Yanbu is a strategically important Saudi port on the Red Sea. It serves as a major outlet for Saudi oil exports and has gained further importance because it provides an alternative route for Saudi crude amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipping linked to Saudi Arabia has faced increasing pressure since the Houthis announced a blockade targeting Saudi-linked vessels in the Red Sea.

The Houthis have also claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Saudi energy facilities and shipping in recent weeks. In July, the group said it had targeted facilities belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco in Yanbu.

The latest developments have heightened concerns over the security of the Red Sea, one of the world’s key maritime trade routes. Continued attacks could disrupt commercial shipping and place additional pressure on regional energy supplies.

Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have previously been involved in a prolonged conflict in Yemen. Although diplomatic efforts in recent years helped reduce tensions and encouraged discussions towards a political settlement, renewed attacks have complicated those efforts.

Saudi Arabia’s reported preparations for a possible wider confrontation suggest that Riyadh is taking the latest attacks seriously. Any decision to launch major military operations in Yemen, however, could significantly change the regional security situation.
