US television anchor Savannah Guthrie dressed as Rachel Green, the character played by Jennifer Aniston in the sitcom Friends, for the Today show’s Halloween special on Friday.

The programme’s October 30 broadcast celebrated NBC’s centenary, with presenters and guests dressing as characters and personalities associated with the network’s history. Guthrie also appeared as an NBC page during the show.

Guthrie’s Rachel Green costume included a recreation of the character’s distinctive layered hairstyle, which became widely popular in the 1990s when Friends was on television. The Saturday Night Live wig team helped recreate the look.

Guthrie’s co-host Jenna Bush Hager dressed as Phoebe Buffay, another character from the sitcom, played by Lisa Kudrow. Bush Hager also performed the show’s fictional song “Smelly Cat”.

The Halloween appearance followed a Today trip to Ireland earlier in October, when the programme broadcast live from the country on October 16. Guthrie said the visit had personal significance because of her family’s Irish roots.

“I’ve never been to Ireland. My mother’s family — my mother was Irish. Her grandmother — they’re from Galway,” she said during a September broadcast.

Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, has been missing since February after disappearing from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Authorities continue to investigate her disappearance.
