Selena Gomez and Timothée Chalamet have given fans their first proper look at Not Alone, the upcoming animated film from Illumination in which the two lend their voices to a pair of unlikely romantics caught up in an interstellar adventure.
The trailer, released on Tuesday, June 30, was shared simultaneously on the official social media accounts of both stars, closing out the month with one of the most anticipated animated reveals of the year. The caption accompanying the post read simply: “There’s more life out there. Not Alone. In theatres April 2027.”
Chalamet voices Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic whose quiet, solitary world is upended when he is paired with Fran, voiced by Gomez, a brilliant astro-botanist developing the world’s first plant fuelled rocket. As the two prepare for launch, sparks begin to fly between the unlikely pair, though neither of them turns out to be particularly skilled at romance, which adds a layer of awkward charm to their budding connection.
The situation grows even more complicated when three small aliens, stranded far from home, take refuge in Joe’s house and need to borrow the rocket to get back to their planet. What begins as a sweet, quietly developing romance quickly becomes a chaotic mission with the fate of the aliens hanging in the balance.
The three extraterrestrial visitors are voiced by an equally impressive supporting cast. Rob Brydon, known for Barbie and The Trip, voices Dunk. Diane Morgan, familiar to audiences from the Cunk series and Mandy, voices Welly. Jamie Demetriou, whose Emmy winning work on Stath Lets Flats brought him widespread recognition, voices Shirm. Adding another welcome surprise, Brett Goldstein voices Zandro, an officer pursuing the aliens, marking his contribution to the film’s ensemble.
Not Alone is directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val. Guillon is a significant creative force within Illumination, having previously co-directed Despicable Me 3 and contributed design work across the studio’s most beloved franchises, including Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing.
The film arrives at a busy and exciting time for both of its stars. Chalamet, best known for his Oscar nominated performance in Call Me by Your Name and his leading role in the Dune franchise, continues to be one of Hollywood’s most sought after performers. Gomez, meanwhile, has just returned from London after wrapping filming on the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building, the hit Hulu mystery comedy she has been part of since 2021, which is expected to premiere later this year.
Not Alone is set for a worldwide theatrical release in April 2027.
