Seven terrorists attack Kohat police lines

At least six terrorists have been killed after a group of armed attackers stormed a police lines compound in Kohat, triggering an intense gun battle with police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zulfiqar Hameed said the attack began when a terrorist rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the gate of the old police lines. The blast caused significant damage and was followed by gunfire as the attackers attempted to enter the compound.

According to the Central Police Office, seven armed terrorists entered the police lines during the attack. Police and CTD personnel immediately responded and engaged the attackers in a prolonged exchange of fire.

Officials said security forces have so far killed six terrorists. The dead include a suicide bomber and a sniper, according to authorities. Security personnel have launched a clearance operation inside the compound and were conducting final checks to ensure that no attackers remained in the area.

The attack prompted a strong response from the federal and provincial leadership, with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemning the incident and expressing grief over the loss of life.

President Zardari said the complete elimination of what he described as Fitna al-Khawarij and other terrorist elements remains essential for national security. He also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the authorities to provide immediate and comprehensive medical treatment to those injured in the attack. He also sought a report from the relevant authorities regarding the nature of the explosion and the circumstances that led to the incident.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the attack and extended his condolences to the families of those killed. He said the government stood with the families of the victims during the difficult time.

Naqvi added that what he called the “cowardly actions” of the militants would not weaken the nation’s resolve to combat terrorism.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi took notice of the Kohat attack and sought a detailed report from senior police officials. He described the incident as highly regrettable and unacceptable and directed the authorities to continue efforts against terrorist elements.

Security officials continued the clearance operation following the attack while authorities worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the bombing, infiltration and subsequent firefight.
