Sinner defeats Alcaraz to win Monte Carlo Masters, reclaims no. 1

Jannik Sinner produced a commanding performance to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets and lift his maiden Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday, reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking in a thrilling showdown between tennis’s two brightest stars.

The Italian star overcame the Spanish sensation 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in a high-intensity final played under testing, windy conditions at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. With the victory, Sinner secured his third ATP Masters 1000 title of the season and continued a remarkable run of dominance on the tour.

The 24-year-old’s triumph adds another milestone to an already sensational year, following his “Sunshine Double” success in Indian Wells and Miami. He has now become only the third player in history, alongside legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, to win four consecutive ATP 1000 titles.

Speaking after the match, Sinner said the victory held special meaning for him both personally and professionally.

“Getting back to No. 1 means a lot for me. I am very happy to win a big title on this surface,” he said. “We knew it would be a tough match, but I stayed focused in the important moments.”

The opening set proved tightly contested, with both players trading powerful baseline exchanges and holding firm under pressure. Sinner eventually edged the tie-break after Alcaraz committed a costly double fault on set point.

In the second set, Alcaraz briefly surged ahead, breaking early with a brilliant rally that electrified the crowd. However, Sinner’s consistency and relentless pressure soon turned the tide. From 3-1 down, he stormed back to win five consecutive games, sealing the match and the title in dominant fashion.

The victory extends Sinner’s winning streak to 17 matches and makes him the first player since Djokovic in 2015 to win the opening three ATP 1000 events of the season. He is also now 7-10 in his head-to-head record against Alcaraz, narrowing the gap in one of tennis’s most exciting rivalries.

Despite the defeat, Alcaraz was gracious in acknowledging his rival’s performance.

“He was better in the important moments. I had chances, but I didn’t take them,” the Spaniard admitted during the trophy ceremony. “What he’s achieving right now is incredible.”

Sinner, meanwhile, hinted at a possible strategic break ahead of the French Open as he targets his first Roland Garros title, where he came agonizingly close last year in a dramatic final against Alcaraz.
