Sohail Chaudhry appointed Islamabad IG, Ali Nasir Rizvi named NCCIA DG

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has made major changes to the leadership of Islamabad Police and cybercrime investigations appointing Captain (Retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry as the new Inspector General of Islamabad Police and outgoing IG Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi as Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

According to notifications issued by the Establishment Division on September 12, 2026 obtained by Minute Mirror, both appointments are effective immediately and will remain in force until further orders.

Minute Mirror report confirmed day later

Minute Mirror had reported on September 11, 2026 citing senior government sources that both key appointments were expected. The official notifications issued a day later formally confirmed the appointments.

According to Establishment Division Notification No. 12(10)/2004-E-3(Police), Police Service of Pakistan Grade-20 officer Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi has been transferred from the post of Islamabad IG and appointed Director General of the NCCIA under Section 29(3) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 as amended in 2025.

Sohail Chaudhry appointed new Islamabad IG

Under a separate notification, No. 12(56)/2000-E-3(Police), Captain (Retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry serving under the Government of Punjab has been appointed IG ICT Police under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act 1973.

According to sources, Sohail Chaudhry’s appointment comes at a time when Islamabad is focusing on street crime, public safety and overall policing matters.

Sources said Captain Sohail Chaudhry’s previous experience including serving as Commandant of the Police Training College Lahore, DIG Operations Lahore and CPO Faisalabad could help improve policing and operational supervision in the capital.

Ali Nasir Rizvi given NCCIA responsibility

Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi’s appointment to the NCCIA comes at a time when complaints related to online fraud and digital crimes are increasing across the country. Officials expect Rizvi’s extensive policing experience to help strengthen cybercrime investigations and law enforcement capabilities.

List of 63 officers prepared for NCCIA

Meanwhile, Minute Mirror has learnt that before leaving office, IG Ali Nasir Rizvi had prepared a list of 63 Islamabad Police officers and personnel for possible deputation to the NCCIA.

According to the “List for NCCIA Selection” available with Minute Mirror, the list includes six inspectors, 32 sub-inspectors, 17 ASIs/TASIs and eight constables. The list identifies 19 personnel as “Selected Through Interview” and 44 as “Willing.”

The officers and personnel are serving in Capital Patrolling, Rescue 15, CTD, Investigation, Safe City and other police wings. According to sources, Ali Nasir Rizvi wanted to obtain approval for the proposed deputation list before leaving office.

The federal government is viewing the new appointments as an important administrative step to improve performance in both traditional policing and cybercrime investigations in the capital. Both appointments are effective immediately.
