WAVRE: Spain moved a major step closer to the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after producing a spirited 2-1 victory over defending champions Germany in a gripping second-stage encounter at the Belfius Hockey Arena on Friday.
The result gave Spain three valuable points and further intensified the battle for the semi-final places, with every goal and point becoming increasingly important as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
Spain’s José Basterra emerged as the hero of the contest, scoring both goals to overturn Germany’s early advantage and secure a memorable victory for the Red Sticks.
The opening quarter offered little to separate the two sides as both defences remained disciplined. Germany enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to turn pressure into a breakthrough, while Spain patiently waited for opportunities on the counter.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 25th minute when Germany’s Justus Weigand found the back of the net, putting the defending champions 1-0 ahead.
Spain, however, responded almost immediately.
Just four minutes after Germany took the lead, Basterra stepped up from the penalty spot and calmly converted a penalty stroke to restore parity. The equaliser gave Spain renewed confidence and ensured the teams entered the final stages locked at 1-1.
Neither side was willing to surrender ground in the third quarter. Germany pushed forward in search of another breakthrough, while Spain’s defensive structure repeatedly frustrated their opponents.
The decisive moment arrived in the 49th minute.
Basterra struck again, completing his brace and putting Spain 2-1 ahead. Germany attempted to mount a late comeback, but Spain held firm under pressure to protect its narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory lifted Spain to second place in the Pool F crossover points table, with Australia leading the standings. With the semi-finals now within sight, Spain will be determined to maintain its momentum in the remaining matches.
The tournament format makes every result particularly significant. The top two teams from each second-stage pool will advance to the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will compete in classification matches to determine their final positions.
Teams also carry forward points earned against fellow qualifiers from the opening stage before playing two additional matches against new opponents.
Meanwhile, South Africa also impressed at the Belfius Hockey Arena, defeating France 3-1 in another second-stage encounter. Mustaphaa Cassiem scored twice, while Dayaan Cassiem added the other goal to help South Africa claim an important victory.
With the knockout race tightening, Spain’s comeback against Germany could prove crucial. Basterra’s two-goal performance has not only delivered three points but also sent a clear warning to the rest of the tournament: the Red Sticks are serious contenders for a place in the semi-finals.
