LOS ANGELES: Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to rule the North American box office, securing the top spot for a fourth consecutive weekend despite a significant drop in earnings.

The Marvel superhero movie, led by Tom Holland and Zendaya, earned an estimated $39 million in the United States and Canada over the weekend. The figure marked a 45 per cent decline from its previous weekend’s performance.

Despite the drop, the film has maintained a remarkable run since arriving in cinemas on July 31. It has now generated around $854.9 million in North American ticket sales, while its international earnings have reached approximately $1.37 billion.

The film’s strong performance comes after it recorded the biggest opening weekend ever at the domestic box office, setting a major milestone for the franchise.

Sony Pictures’ Insidious: Out of the Further secured second place during its debut weekend. The sixth entry in the long-running horror series collected $25.3 million from North American cinemas.

The horror film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers. Its story centres on a young woman with the unusual ability to bring spirits into the living world, while she struggles with supernatural forces haunting her.

Industry analyst David Gross described the film’s opening as a solid result for the sixth instalment of a horror franchise. However, he noted that its debut was considerably lower than the opening performance of the fifth Insidious movie, released in July 2023.

The latest box-office figures highlight the continuing strength of major franchise films in cinemas. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day has experienced a week-to-week decline, its enormous cumulative earnings have kept it comfortably ahead of its competitors.

The film’s continued success is also strengthening Marvel’s position in the global theatrical market, with its combined domestic and international revenue now exceeding $2.2 billion.

With several major releases still to arrive in cinemas, the superhero blockbuster will face fresh competition in the coming weeks. However, its four-week reign at the top demonstrates the strong audience demand for the latest chapter in Spider-Man’s cinematic journey.
