LOS ANGELES: St. Louis City claimed the first trophy in the club’s history after defeating Columbus Crew 5-3 on penalties to lift the US Open Cup.
The two Major League Soccer sides played out a goalless draw after extra time before St. Louis secured victory in the shoot-out. Daniel Edelman converted the decisive penalty, while substitute goalkeeper Ben Lundt played a crucial role by saving Columbus’ opening attempt from Santiago Rodriguez.
Louis once again proved decisive against Columbus, having also scored the winning penalty to eliminate the club during the 2024 MLS postseason.
Following his successful kick, Edelman sprinted across the pitch to celebrate with St. Louis supporters. He later highlighted the importance of confidence, preparation and concentration when taking penalties.
The triumph marks a landmark achievement for St. Louis City, which joined Major League Soccer as an expansion team in 2019. The US Open Cup, first contested in 1913-14, is the oldest annual team tournament in the United States.
Edelman described the victory as a special moment for the team, its players and the city, celebrating the club’s maiden major trophy.
