Taylor Swift makes VMA history with record 31st award

Taylor Swift has added another milestone to an already remarkable career, becoming the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after making history at the 2026 ceremony.

Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors award, taking her career VMA tally to 31 awards. She had previously shared the record with Beyoncé, with both artists holding 30 VMAs.

The newly introduced Artist Director Honors recognizes performers who have made a significant contribution behind the camera, particularly by expanding the creative possibilities of music videos and advancing visual storytelling.

While accepting the honor, Swift reflected on her two-decade involvement in music videos. She said she has worked on around 60 music videos over the years, including 18 projects that she wrote and directed herself.

The achievement underlined a side of Swift’s career that extends beyond performing and songwriting. Her increasing involvement in the visual and directorial aspects of her projects has become an important part of her artistic identity.

Swift had another major reason to celebrate during the ceremony. Her music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” won the coveted Video of the Year award. The singer dedicated the honor to the late legendary performer Dolly Parton, adding an emotional moment to the event.

The night also gave fans their first look at Swift’s latest visual project. She premiered the music video for her new song “Patient Zero”, which she also directed herself.

The VMA ceremony therefore became more than another awards night for Swift. With a record-breaking 31 trophies, a new directing honor, a Video of the Year win and a fresh music video premiere, the event highlighted the breadth of her work both in front of and behind the camera.
