RAWALPINDI: Police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged exhumation of the body of a girl child from a grave in the Sheikhan area of Peshawar, officials said. According to police, the suspect was allegedly caught early Monday morning while digging a grave in a local graveyard and removing the body of a girl child. He was initially detained by local people and later handed over to personnel at the Sheikhan Police Post. Police said the suspect was subsequently shifted to Budh Bher Police Station, where an investigation is under way.
Police sources said the man has been identified as Salman. However, his nationality and other personal details are yet to be independently verified.
According to police, investigators are looking into allegations that other graves in the area may also have been disturbed. The authorities are trying to determine whether the suspect was involved in any previous incidents and whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed took notice of the incident and directed the SHO of Budh Bher Police Station to submit an immediate report.
The CCPO also ordered the formation of a special police team to investigate the matter and establish the facts surrounding the alleged exhumation.
Police said the motive behind the alleged removal of the child’s body was not immediately known. Investigators are also examining the number of graves that may have been disturbed and whether there is any evidence linking the suspect to other such incidents.
The police chief urged local residents to remain peaceful and exercise patience and restraint while the investigation is in progress.
Police said further details, including the registration of a formal case and findings of the investigation, would be shared after verification.
