Maj Gen Adil Iftikhar appointed new DG Military Intelligence

ISLAMABAD: The reported appointment of Major General Adil Iftikhar Warriach as Director General Military Intelligence (DG MI) comes as part of a wider reshuffle of senior Pakistan Army appointments involving intelligence directorates and field formations.

According to reports published on September 19, Major General Adil Iftikhar Warriach has been appointed DG Military Intelligence, replacing Major General Wajid Aziz. Warriach had been serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7th Infantry Division in Miranshah, North Waziristan.

His move from a field command in North Waziristan to a senior intelligence position places particular attention on his experience in a region that has remained an important security theatre.

From Miranshah to Military Intelligence

Major General Warriach’s tenure as GOC 7 Division has included engagement with local communities, civil authorities and tribal elders in North Waziristan.

Publicly available material from the Pakistan Armed Forces records his participation in jirgas with tribal elders in Miranshah, where security, development, public welfare and administrative issues were discussed.

These engagements provide a documented indication of his exposure to the operational and civil-security environment of North Waziristan.

The 7th Infantry Division is based in the Miranshah area and operates in a region that has been central to Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts. Major General Warriach has also been publicly identified as the division’s GOC in available military records.

Why Field Experience Is Relevant

Military Intelligence is responsible for intelligence and counter-intelligence functions within the armed forces. The Director General position is normally held by a serving major general and operates within the Army’s General Staff structure.

Against this background, Warriach’s previous field command provides one identifiable dimension of his professional background: direct exposure to security operations and coordination in a high-risk region.

North Waziristan presents a complex operating environment involving security operations, border-related issues, local administration and engagement with tribal communities. His documented interactions with tribal elders and civil officials therefore form part of the field experience he brings to his new assignment.

However, the effectiveness of an intelligence appointment cannot be determined solely from a previous field command. Intelligence leadership also involves analysis, counter-intelligence, information assessment, institutional coordination and strategic decision-making.

Wider Military Reshuffle

Warriach’s reported appointment is part of a broader series of senior military postings announced or reported this month.

The reported changes include Major General Sajid Mehmood, Major General Muhammad Shamriaz Khan and Major General Jawwad Riaz taking senior positions within the ISI, while changes have also been reported in several infantry divisions and Frontier Corps commands.

The reshuffle therefore extends beyond a single intelligence appointment and involves changes across field formations and security-related commands.

A New Role at a Critical Time

The transition from command of a frontline division to the country’s military intelligence apparatus represents a significant change in responsibilities for Major General Warriach.

His previous posting gave him direct exposure to North Waziristan’s security environment and interaction with local stakeholders. His new assignment, if formally confirmed through official channels, will place him in a role focused on intelligence and counter-intelligence rather than direct field command.

The appointment also comes as Pakistan continues to face security challenges along its western borders and in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

For Military Intelligence, the central challenge will be translating field-level information and operational experience into timely threat assessments, counter-intelligence measures and coordinated responses.

Major General Warriach’s move from Miranshah to the intelligence establishment consequently represents both a personnel change and a shift from direct field command to an institutionally broader security role.
