A 13-year-old boy was killed and two other people were injured after part of a historic fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory in the city of Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca.

According to Spanish media reports, around 50 football fans had gathered near the historic fountain to celebrate Spain’s World Cup triumph. During the celebrations, the heavy upper section of the fountain suddenly collapsed onto people standing below.

Three people were injured in the incident. The 13-year-old boy later died from his injuries at a hospital. Another fan was taken to a hospital in Salamanca in critical condition, while a third person sustained injuries and received medical treatment.

Police, firefighters and emergency medical teams rushed to the scene immediately after the collapse. Rescue workers secured the area and provided assistance to the injured before launching an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Following the tragedy, the city council expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced three days of official mourning from July 20 to July 22.

In a statement, the council said it was heartbreaking that celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory had turned into a national tragedy.

Spain recently claimed its second FIFA World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final in the United States. The victory sparked celebrations across the country before the fatal accident cast a shadow over the nationwide festivities.
