The Farmers of Dasht Need Water, Not Fear

Dasht, particularly the agricultural areas around Peerani Lamb, plays an important role in the daily life and economy of Turbat. With water canals originating from the Mirani Dam, the area supports extensive farming and livestock. Much of the grass and firewood used in Turbat comes from Dasht, while many animals for Eidul Azha are also brought from the area. Despite this contribution, local farmers face serious difficulties in accessing water for their gardens and fields.

The canals passing through Dasht often flow near farms and green fields before eventually reaching their destinations. However, farmers are reportedly not allowed to freely use this water for irrigation. When they place pipes or pumps to bring canal water to their gardens, they say the pipes are sometimes cut or removed by the concerned authorities. As this has happened repeatedly, many farmers live in fear of losing their irrigation arrangements.

The result is that some farmers are forced to change their entire daily routine. After working in their fields throughout the day, they return late at night—sometimes at midnight or even 1am—to water their crops when they feel they can do so without interference. During one of my visits to Dasht, I was surprised to learn about the difficulties faced by these hardworking people. They spend their days producing crops, grass and other goods that benefit the people of Turbat, yet they may have to sacrifice their sleep simply to water their own fields.

Water management is necessary, and canals must certainly be regulated. However, if water can legally and safely be provided to nearby agricultural lands without affecting the main supply or downstream users, the authorities should consider a practical irrigation system. Farmers should not be forced to work in fear or depend on midnight hours to water their crops.

Dasht contributes greatly to the region’s agriculture and livestock. Its farmers deserve a fair and organised system that supports their work rather than making it more difficult. The concerned authorities should review the issue and find a solution that protects the water system while also allowing genuine farmers reasonable access to irrigation.
