The incident reportedly took place at Barkat Market where the three personnel stopped a citizen and requested money for their meal. The officers were on duty at the time and were wearing their police uniforms when they allegedly made the demand.
A police spokesperson confirmed the arrests saying the personnel had been taken into custody following the incident. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against them although further details about the charges and the circumstances surrounding their arrest were not immediately disclosed.
The incident prompted a response from Deputy Inspector General of Police Operations Faisal Kamran who stressed that the reputation and dignity of the police force would not be compromised.
Kamran made it clear that conduct undermining the standing of the department would not be tolerated. His remarks came as the department moved against the three personnel over their alleged behaviour while carrying out official duties.
The case has drawn attention to the responsibility of police officers to maintain professional conduct while interacting with members of the public. Police personnel are expected to perform their duties in uniform and uphold the standards associated with their positions.
Authorities have not shared the identities or ranks of the arrested officers nor have they provided details about whether any further departmental action is being considered.
The registration of a formal case means the matter will proceed through the relevant legal process.
