US President Donald Trump officially launched celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States with a large rally on the National Mall in Washington, turning the opening event into a speech focused largely on his leadership and political message.
The celebration featured military bands, flyovers by stealth bombers and a performance by singer Lee Greenwood, who sang “God Bless the USA.” Speaking before a crowd gathered near the Capitol, Trump praised the country’s history and declared that the United States was becoming stronger under his leadership. He told supporters that America had regained its standing on the world stage and claimed that other nations no longer looked down on the country.
Although the event celebrated the nation’s upcoming anniversary, Trump’s speech closely resembled his campaign appearances. He defended his immigration policies, highlighted his efforts to strengthen border security and repeated his opposition to transgender rights. Compared with many of his previous rallies, however, he spent less time attacking political opponents and only briefly criticised the previous administration.
Trump also spoke about domestic projects, including renovation work around the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial and plans to build a new ballroom at the White House. His speech lasted less than 30 minutes, making it one of the shortest public addresses of his second term. Before leaving the stage, he invited supporters to attend another rally on Independence Day, promising to speak again on July 4.
The gathering marked the beginning of several weeks of events planned under the banner of The Great American State Fair to celebrate the country’s founding in 1776. However, the opening programme attracted controversy after several well known musicians withdrew from scheduled performances, saying they believed the celebrations had become too political.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the audience and criticised those artists who decided not to participate. He praised Trump and described him as one of the greatest presidents in American history. Trump also told supporters that the country was entering what he called a new golden age.
The event comes as the president seeks to rebuild public confidence ahead of the November congressional elections. The administration has argued that easing tensions with Iran and the reopening of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have helped stabilise oil markets and reduced concerns over the recent conflict.
Supporters travelled from across the country to attend the celebration. Families from states including Ohio and New York said they had combined visits to Washington with the anniversary events and welcomed the opportunity to hear Trump speak in person. Many attendees wore patriotic clothing and Make America Great Again hats while enjoying food and entertainment throughout the evening.
Despite the enthusiastic atmosphere, Trump continues to face political challenges. Recent opinion polls show his public approval remains low, with many Americans expressing concerns about inflation, the economy and foreign policy. Critics have also questioned spending on projects linked to the anniversary celebrations, arguing that national events should unite Americans rather than become politically focused.
Even so, the president used the opening ceremony to present an optimistic message, insisting that his administration has restored confidence in the country and promising that the anniversary celebrations will showcase what he believes is a stronger and more successful America.
