Trump off to Ireland for two-day visit

President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Ireland on Saturday, where he will meet with Irish leaders before attending a golf tournament this weekend.

The US president is scheduled to hold separate meetings in Dublin with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin. Trump will also meet US and Irish business leaders in Dublin.

Afterwards, he will travel to the golf club in Doonbeg to watch the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament on Sunday. Trump is expected to present the trophy to the tournament champion.

According to Irish Prime Minister Martin, the relationship between Ireland and the United States is economically significant.

Around 10% of workers in Ireland are employed by US-owned companies, while corporate tax revenues have contributed significantly to Ireland’s public finances over the decades.

Martin also said: “I look forward to welcoming President Trump to Ireland and to discussing the many issues of mutual interest and reaffirming the strong economic, cultural and people-to-people ties between Ireland and the United States.”

“His visit comes during a remarkable sporting summer for Ireland, and the United States, and this weekend’s Irish Open at Trump International Doonbeg will be a fitting conclusion to an outstanding season of sport, and I hope we will see an Irish winner lifting the trophy on Sunday.”

Trump’s visit to Ireland is expected to draw anti-war and anti-Iran protests. Ireland is one of the most pro-Palestinian countries in the European Union and has faced criticism from Israel over its position on the conflict.

Trump first visited the Republic of Ireland in 2019.
