The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced new traffic regulations that will come into effect on January 1, 2027. The new rules aim to improve road safety, prevent traffic accidents and reduce risks associated with driver fatigue and exhaustion.
Under the new regulations, professional drivers will not be allowed to drive for more than nine hours within a 24-hour period. The proposed restrictions will apply to taxi, truck, bus and delivery drivers, limiting their daily driving hours to ensure safer journeys.
The authorities have also prohibited driving while feeling tired or sleepy. The new measure is intended to reduce accidents caused by fatigue and ensure that professional drivers remain alert while operating vehicles.
The Federal Traffic Council has also been authorised to revise the nine-hour driving limit. Any changes to the prescribed duration will apply to both private and professional drivers.
The new regulations also introduce mandatory child safety requirements. Children aged four years and below must be seated in approved child safety seats while travelling in vehicles. The seats must be installed in the rear of the vehicle and selected according to the child’s height and weight.
The UAE has also announced changes to the validity period of driving licences. Driving licences issued to UAE and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals will remain valid for 10 years. Meanwhile, licences issued to foreign residents will have a validity period of five years.
In addition, new eyesight assessment standards have been introduced for drivers. Driving licence renewals will require applicants to undergo vision tests to ensure they meet the prescribed medical standards.
The authorities have also established separate eyesight assessment requirements for different categories of vehicles, depending on the type of vehicle a person is authorised to drive.
The revised regulations are part of the UAE’s efforts to strengthen road safety standards, improve driver fitness and minimise accidents across the country.
