UK slaps fresh sanctions on Russian cyber networks

The United Kingdom has announced a new package of sanctions against Russian cyber networks, accusing them of conducting operations aimed at spreading disruption and division across Europe.

The British government said the measures target 24 individuals and organisations allegedly linked to harmful cyber and hybrid activities connected with Russian intelligence services.

The sanctions include senior officials from Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU. Britain accused them of being involved in directing cyber operations and other activities that pose security threats.

The UK government said the action was taken to protect national security and counter attempts to undermine stability in Europe.

Russia’s embassy in London has not issued any immediate statement regarding the new sanctions.

The announcement was made in coordination with the European Union, as Western countries continue efforts to increase pressure on Moscow over security concerns.

Meanwhile, the European Union is still working on a broader 21st sanctions package against Russia. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said member states have not yet resolved all outstanding issues.

She said EU countries were considering adding around 250 individuals and entities to the sanctions list. According to Kallas, it would be the largest number of new listings introduced in a single sanctions decision.

However, discussions remain ongoing over additional measures, including possible restrictions on maritime services and Russia’s liquefied natural gas sector.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys called for stronger action, saying security concerns should not be compromised due to economic interests.

He warned that delaying tougher measures could create further risks for European security.
