The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution co-authored by Pakistan and Denmark, aimed at strengthening accountability for attacks on UN peacekeepers around the world.
The resolution received the full backing of all 15 Council members and was co-sponsored by more than 100 UN member states, reflecting broad international consensus on improving the safety of peace operations.
According to UN figures, 1,095 peacekeepers have been killed in malicious attacks since 1948, including 359 deaths since 2013, while thousands have sustained injuries during missions.
Speaking before the vote, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad stressed that the Council must move beyond symbolic statements and ensure concrete accountability measures for crimes against peacekeepers.
He said the draft resolution introduces practical steps, including mandatory annual reporting by the UN Secretary-General on investigations and prosecutions related to attacks on peacekeepers.
Following the adoption of the resolution, Ambassador Ahmad thanked Council members for their support and acknowledged Denmark’s cooperation in advancing the initiative.
Denmark’s UN envoy Christina Markus Lassen welcomed the unanimous adoption, calling it a strong signal of support for the more than 50,000 peacekeepers currently serving in global missions.
She noted that Denmark was pleased to collaborate with Pakistan on strengthening peacekeeping accountability within the Council framework.
The resolution, now adopted as UN Resolution 2823, condemns all attacks on UN peacekeepers and pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
It further warns that such attacks may amount to war crimes and emphasizes that accountability is essential to deter future violence and improve the safety of UN missions worldwide.
